The Red-tailed Hawk chicks in the nest overlooking Tompkins Sq. Park show off their aerial skills, catching a little bit of air over the nest. The oldest chick at this point is 43 days old. Some of the hawk experts I’ve talked to say they are still a few days away from leaving the nest.

The bearing of the one that stands on the left, with its wings pulled back and down, is so statuesque and beautiful (love those long fluff feather-thick thighs!) Frightfully hilarious too, when at the edge for a moment, s/he tips over a bit too much and rocks back, seeming to realize s/he almost tipped over and “fell” the perch. Instantly s/he hunkered in her her down, bringing her center of gravity lower and a tad farther back from the edge. Glorious! Thanks. Tomorrow!!

This is an old, old saga coming to life again each spring. Thank you world, God, Nature, and person who tolerates them outside her window.

Yeah, it’s really wonderful that we have real wildlife here in our local park in the middle of the city.
